Golden Eagles Get A Big Home Win Over Pioneers

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team turned in one of its most impressing outings of the season on Saturday and posted a big California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Cal State East Bay.

Sydney Bordonaro led five Golden Eagles in double figures and Jo Ana Adams came up with some big plays down the stretch to lead the Golden Eagles to a 70-62 win over the Pioneers in University Gym. Cal State LA (9-13, 7-9 CCAA) snapped a three-game losing streak and kept alive its hopes for a spot in the CCAA Tournament. Cal State East Bay (15-8, 11-6 CCAA) entered the day in third place in the CCAA.

The game was tied, 49-49, after three quarters, but the Golden Eagles outscored the Pioneers, 21-13, over the final quarter to pull out the win.

Alyssa Fisher had 14 points, Nicole Flennaugh had 13 points, Mackenzie Barnes had 11 points and 12 rebounds and Adams finished with 10 points.

Kayley Hsiung had 17 points to lead four Pioneers in double figures.

Cal State LA shot 35.8 percent for the game (24-of-67) and was 5-of-21 from 3-point range. Cal State East Bay shot 34.3 percent overall (23-of-67) and was 10-of-30 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 17-of-25 from the free-throw line and the Pioneers were only 6-of-14. Cal State LA owned a 48-45 rebounding edge and committed 18 turnovers to 17 for the Pioneers.

The Golden Eagles trailed after one quarter, 16-9, but fought back to take a 34-33 halftime lead on a driving layup by Fisher before the buzzer.

Cal State LA took its biggest lead of the game 49-40, on a basket by Fisher, but the Pioneers went on a 9-0 run over the final 2:42 of the period to tie it entering the fourth.

The Golden Eagles then fell behind, 52-49, but went on a 13-1 run to take control of the game. Barnes put the Golden Eagles ahead, 53-52, a pair of free throws by Bordonaro were followed by a 3-pointer by Bordonaro and another 3-pointer by Bordonaro made it 62-53 with five minutes left. The Pioneers closed to within 62-59, but Adams converted a three-point play and scored on an offensive rebound with 54 seconds to stretch the lead to 67-59 with less than one minute left.

Cal State LA will return to action with a road game at Cal State San Marcos on Thursday.
