Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Golden Eagles Fall On A Late Basket To Pioneers

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team came out on the short end of another heartbreaker Saturday in University Gym.

The Golden Eagles led for most of the game, but a late 3-pointer in the final seconds lifted Cal State East Bay to a 75-73 victory in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest. Cal State LA (11-11, 6-10 CCAA) led by as many as 14 points early in the second half, but couldn't hold off the Pioneers (13-10, 9-8 CCAA).

Michael-Isaiah Ajiboye led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 19 points. Jordan Rogers had 15 points and Khalil Williams had 14 points.

Zafir Williams had 24 points and 11 rebounds for Cal State East Bay, but the star of the game was backup guard Julian Lopez, who hit a pair of 3-pointers late in the game, including what turned out to be the game-winner with 10 seconds left.

Cal State LA shot 47.3 percent for the game (26-of-55) and was 7-of-21 from 3-point range. Cal State East Bay shot 45.8 percent (27-of-59) and was 8-of-27 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 14-of-19 from the free-throw line, while the Pioneers were 13-of-20.

Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 36-32, and committed 11 turnovers to 13 for the Pioneers.

It was a tough loss for the Golden Eagles, who spent the majority of the game with the lead. Cal State LA had a 41-30 halftime lead and extended the lead to 44-30 when Rogers hit a 3-pointer to open up the second half. The Pioneers, though, responded with a 15-0 run to take a brief 45-44 lead.

Cal State LA regained the lead on a 3-pointer by Muhammad, extended it on an offensive rebound basket by Jermaine Camacho-Small and took a 61-51 lead on a basket by Dawkins with seven minutes to play.

A basket by Rogers gave the Golden Eagles a 71-65 lead with 2:33 to go, but the Pioneers scored the next seven points, capped by Lopez' first big 3-pointer, to take a 72-71 lead.

Ajiboye, who had a big second half for the Golden Eagles, hit a pair of free throws to put the Golden Eagles back in front, 73-72, and Lewis grabbed a big rebound with 20 seconds to go. The Golden Eagles then missed a pair of free throws and Lopez hit the game-winner moments later.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a big road game at Cal State San Marcos.
