LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team made a furious rally Thursday night in an entertaining Homecoming Game that came down to the wire.
The Golden Eagles stormed back from a 16-point deficit with 4:05 to go and had an open look to make it a one-possession game in the final minute before falling to a hot-shooting Cal State Monterey Bay team, 103-97, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in University Gym. Cal State LA (11-10, 6-9 CCAA) slipped back into a tie for eighth place with Cal State Dominguez Hills with seven conference games remaining.
Michael Wright had a team-high 20 points for the Golden Eagles, while
Jordan Rogers had 17 points.
Fard Muhammad had 14 points,
Ja'Sean Lewis had 12 points and seven rebounds and
Khalil Williams had 11 points to give Cal State LA five players in double figures.
Andrew Ferguson had 22 points and Jahvon Johnson had 21 points for Cal State Monterey Bay (8-14, 5-11 CCAA).
Shacquille Dawkins had nine points for the Golden Eagles, while
Michael-Isaiah Ajiboye had eight points.
The Golden Eagles shot 47.3 percent for the game (35-of-74) and were 14-of-37 from 3-point range. The Otters, though, shot 52.6 percent overall and a sizzling 61.9 percent from 3-point range (13-of-21). The Otters were 30-of-39 from the free-throw line, while the Golden Eagles were just 13-of-19. Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 42-32, and committed 13 turnovers to 18 for the Otters.
The Golden Eagles took a 47-44 halftime lead after a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Wright.
The Golden Eagles took a 49-44 lead on a dunk by Lewis and kept a 51-46 margin after a jumper by Williams. A 3-pointer by Williams gave the Golden Eagles a 54-52 lead and a 3-pointer by Lewis tied it at 57-57 with 16 minutes to go.
A 3-pointer by
Sean Estes and a layup by Wright kept the Golden Eagles within 70-69 with 10:32 to go, but the Otters went on a 23-8 run to open up a 93-77 advantage with just four minutes to go. Cal State LA, though, got some dividends from its full-court press and went on a 10-0 run fueled by a pair of free throws by Rogers, a three-point play by Muhammad, a 3-pointers from Rogers and a layup by Ajiboye that made it 93-87 with less than two minutes to play. A basket by Ajiboye made it 100-94 and when the Golden Eagles quickly stole the ball, they had an open 3-pointer that was straight, but short and the Otters were able to maintain their lead.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Cal State East Bay at 3 p.m.Â
