Golden Eagles Step Up For A Third-Place Finish

SAN DIEGO -- Cal State LA's women's golf team recorded some impressive program history on Tuesday as the Golden Eagles completed their best tournament finish ever.

The Golden Eagles fired a second-round 309 and finished a strong third at the PLNU Sea Lion Invitational at the Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Course. Cal State LA was sixth after an opening-round 319, but had the second-best round among the 11  teams on Tuesday. The 309 is a new program record, as is the 36-hole total of 628.

Sonoma State won the tournament with a team score of 611, while Biola was second at 621. Cal State LA surged into third at 628, one shot ahead of Concordia-Portland and two shots ahead of host Point Loma. Cal State LA also finished ahead of a pair of California Collegiate Athletic Association programs for the first time. Cal State Monterey Bay was seventh at 661 and Chico State was tied for eighth at 675.

Marie Dean climbed into a tie for fourth after shooting a two-over-par 74 on Tuesday. Her two-day total of 151 was seven-over-par.

Morgan Sjoerdsma had the best round of the day for the Golden Eagles with a one-over-par 73. She jumped from 17th to seventh after the 73 that was the second-best individual round in the field. Her two-day total was 152.

Newcomer Emily Wang shot a round of 80 and finished in a tie for 20th with a two-day total of 161, while Caleigh Clark shot a second-round 82 and finished in a tie for 30th overall with a two-day total of 166.

Caitlyn Jimenez shot a second-round 87 and finished 36th overall with a two-day total of 169 and Lisa Duran, playing unattached, shot a second-round of 95 and was 48th after a two-day total of 195.

Cal State LA will return to action on March 2 in the opening round of the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout hosted by Cal State East Bay.
