PUEBLO, COLORADO -- Cal State LA's women's golf team turned in a tremendous performance on Tuesday in the final round of the NCAA Division II West Regional Preview.
The Golden Eagles had some sensational individual performances down the stretch to surge into second place in a 21-team tournament featuring the best teams in the region. Considering the competition, the second-place finish is arguably the best performance in program history.
Cal State LA now has a pair of runner-up finishes and a third-place finish in three tournaments so far this season.
Cal State LA started the day in a tie for fourth and slipped into tie for seventh early Tuesday in a tightly-packed group of teams chasing defending national champion Dallas Baptist. The Golden Eagles showed impressive resilience and used a late flurry of birdies to climb their way into second place.
Joshlyn Ayala made three birdies over her final five holes to pull into a tie for fourth place and
Sarah Amaya shared low round honors with Ayala on the final day with a 3-over-par 74 that included an eagle for the second straight day and a birdie on her next-to-last hole.
Daniela Andrade had four birdies on her round of 76 and
Talia Gutman had a birdie on her 16th hole of the day to help the Golden Eagles with their late push for second place.
Cal State LA finished with a round of 301, which was eight shots better than its opening round of 309 and was the second-best round on Tuesday, behind only Dallas Baptist, which shot a final round of 295 and won the event by 28 shots. Cal State LA finished two shots ahead of third-place tournament host Colorado State-Pueblo, five shots ahead of fourth-place Cal State San Marcos and seven shots ahead of fifth-place St. Mary's.
Ayala overcame a slow start to record her third top-five finish in three tournaments so far this season. She started the day in a tie for fourth, but fell into a tie for 11th after two bogeys and two double-bogeys left her at 6-over-par for the day. Ayala, though, turned things around in a big way and recorded birdies on the 14th, 16th and 17th holes and a par on her last to finish fourth.
Amaya matched Ayala for the best round of the day for the Golden Eagles and she eagled the par-5 11th hole for the second straight day. This time, she chipped in from about 20 yards short of the green to jump-start her round. That got her to 2-over-par for the day and she had two birdies over her final five holes to help the team finish. Amaya had made a 20-foot birdie putt for eagle in Monday's opening round.
Andrade played her best golf early in her round with four birdies on her first seven holes on her way to a 76, which was good enough to finish in a tie for 30th at 155. She had a total of six birdies in the tournament.
Gutman also finished at 155 after a round of 77 on Tuesday. She had three birdies on the day, including one on the 17th hole, which was big in Cal State LA's team finish.
Rilee Crosby had a pair of birdies on Tuesday during a final round of 83. She finished in a tie for 76th in the tournament with a two-day score of 163.
Cal State LA will return to action on Oct. 27 with the opening round of the East Bay Fall Tournament in Hayward.
