LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team wound up being the last one standing on a frantic final day of the regular season in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
The Golden Eagles dropped their regular-season finale at San Francisco State, 102-82, Saturday afternoon, but losses by Cal State San Marcos to UC San Diego and Cal State Monterey Bay to Cal Poly Pomona, left the Golden Eagles in a two-way tie with the Cougars for the eighth and final spot in the CCAA Tournament. Cal State LA (13-15, 8-14 CCAA) won the tiebreaker after the two teams split a pair of regular-season games by virtue of a victory over Cal State San Bernardino on Feb. 20.
Cal State LA will meet top-seed UC San Diego in La Jolla on Tuesday at 8 p.m. in a first-round tournament game.Â
The Golden Eagles had a chance to wrap things up earlier, but ran into a hot-shooting San Francisco State squad. The Gators (10-19, 7-15 CCAA) shot 61 percent in the second half and outscored the Golden Eagles, 63-45, to earn the win.
Fard Muhammad had another outstanding game for the Golden Eagles and led the team with 27 points and five assists. He was 9-of-16 overall and 6-of-13 from 3-point range. He also made three of his four free-throw attempts.
Khalil Williams had 12 points for the Golden Eagles.
Jordan Balser led six Gators in double figures with 27 points. Tyler Jackson had 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Jordan Rogers and
Michael-Isaiah Ajiboye had nine points each for the Golden Eagles, while
CJ Fisher had eight points.
Cal State LA shot 44.3 percent overall (27-of-60) and made 13-of-36 attempts from 3-point range. San Francisco State, though, hit 52.2 percent of its shots and was 15-of-29 from 3-point range.
Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 50-22, and committed 14 turnovers to 19 for the Gators.
Things started well for the Golden Eagles.
Ja'Sean Lewis and Muhammad opened the game with 3-pointers and a layup by Muhammad gave the Golden Eagles a quick 8-2 lead. San Francisco State, though, scored the next nine points to erase the deficit.
A free throw by Rogers cut the Cal State LA deficit to 39-37 at halftime and a Lewis layup tied it early in the second half at 41-41. Muhammad hit a 3-pointer to give Cal State LA a 44-43 lead with 17 minutes to go and a layup by Rogers gave the Golden Eagles their last lead at 46-45 with 16 minutes to play. San Francisco State responded by scoring the next six points and led the rest of the way. A layup by Fisher and a free throw by Ajiboye pulled the Golden Eagles to within four points, 73-69, with eight minutes to go, but the Gators went on an 8-1 run and led by double-digit margins the rest of the way.
