LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team bounced back nicely from a rough opening game to earn a split in Saturday's California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader against Cal State Monterey Bay.
After the Otters collected 22 hits in a 13-1 in the opener, the Golden Eagles scored five times in the second and three more in the third to record an 8-4 win in the nightcap. Cal State LA (3-4, 2-1 CCAA) had 10 hits in the nightcap, including a game-tying two-run home run from
Johnny Pacheco in the second inning.
Travis Burleson gave up seven hits and two earned runs over 5 1/3 innings to get the win, while
Fino Amador retired both batters he faced in the sixth and
Micah Hee retired the side in order in the ninth to end it.
Jordan Myrow and
Thomas Chavez scored two runs each in the nightcap, while
Noe Garcia went 2-for-2 with one run scored and one RBI.
Cal State Monterey Bay (4-5, 1-2 CCAA) took a 2-0 lead with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second, but Pacheco tied it up with a two-run homer to ignite a five-run rally. Garcia followed with a single, Cal State Monterey Bay made two straight throwing errors and
Ryan Lewis reached on a fielder's choice to give the Golden Eagles a 3-2 lead.
Aaron McCann reached on another error as Chavez scored to make it 4-2 and
Allen Pacheco reached on a bad-hop single to drive in Lewis and make it 5-2.
The Otters got two runs back in the top of the third to make it 5-4, but Cal State LA responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame.
Jordan Myrow singled and took third on a double by
Johnny Pacheco before scoring on a wild pitch. Garcia followed with a run-scoring single to make it 7-4 and McCann singled in another run later in the inning.
The pitchers took over from there. Burleson didn't allow a run over his final 2 1/3 innings and Amador and Hee blanked the Otters the rest of the way. Chris Tonna and Augusto Pineda combined for four scoreless innings for Cal State Monterey Bay.
In the opener, the Otters scored seven runs over the first two innings and added four more in the third to take a big early lead. Greg Steinbeck pitched six scoreless innings for the win.Â
Lewis had two of Cal State LA's eight hits and
Miguel Garcia allowed only three hits and one run over 3 1/3 innings of relief.
Brady Miguel went 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBI, including a home run, for the Otters.
Grant Woodward drove in Cal State LA's only run with an eighth-inning single.
The four-game series will conclude with a single game on Sunday at Reeder Field beginning at 11 a.m.
