LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team came out on the right side of an outstanding pitching battle with Cal State Monterey Bay to open California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
Saxon Andross allowed just two hits and one run over 7 1/3 masterful innings and the Golden Eagles beat the Otters, 3-1, Friday night at Reeder Field.
Noe Garcia drove in all three runs for the Golden Eagles and
Fino Amador and
Micah Hee got the final five outs to preserve the victory.
Cal State LA (2-3, 1-0 CCAA) had nine hits in the game, including a go-ahead two-run double from Garcia in the fifth inning.Â
Andross, who hurled six shutout innings in his first start of the season, improved to 2-0 after his second straight brilliant outing. He walked three and struck out seven.
Cal State Monterey Bay (3-4, 0-1 CCAA) also got outstanding pitching in a game that lasted just 1:54. Ethan McRae gave up six hits and two runs over five innings while striking out five and Parker Fokken gave up three hits and one run over three innings while striking out three. The Otters did not walk a batter.
Jordan Myrow went 3-for-3 and scored a run for the Golden Eagles, while
Randy Buenrostro went 2-for-3 and also scored a run.
The Otters took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning when Chris Rubottom smacked a leadoff double, took third on a groundout by Hunter Harris and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Harris.
The Golden Eagles, though, came right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Myrow and
Michael Tillman collected one-out singles and both came around to score on a double to right by Garcia.
Cal State LA added a run in the seventh. Buenrostro singled and took third on a double by Myrow. Garcia then lifted a sacrifice fly to center that was dropped by centerfielder Kyle Guerra for an error. Fokken retired the next two batters to keep the score at 3-1.
Andross departed after getting the first out of the seventh inning and Amador got the final two outs to end the inning. Hee allowed a leadoff single in the ninth inning, but retired the next three batters to record the save.
The series will continue with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
