Golden Eagles Drop CCAA Contest In Pomona

POMONA -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team ran into some tough competition Thursday night in a road contest at Cal Poly Pomona.

The Golden Eagles endured a 14-0 run late in the first half and never quite recovered in an 89-69 loss to the No. 25 Broncos in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in Kellogg Arena. Cal State LA (9-6, 4-5 CCAA) dropped its second straight conference contest after winning two straight before the break.

Jordan Rogers and CJ Fisher scored 12 points each to lead the Golden Eagles. Fisher was a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor, including a pair of 3-pointers, and also made both his free-throw attempts.

Riley Schaefer had a game-high 20 points for Cal Poly Pomona (11-3, 7-2 CCAA).

Khalil Williams had 11 points for the Golden Eagles, while Michael Wright and Michael-Isaiah Ajiboye both had nine points and five rebounds. Ja'Sean Lewis had eight points and five rebounds.

Cal State LA was 24-of-59 overall (40.7 percent) and made 9-of-31 from 3-point range. Cal Poly Pomona was 29-of-57 (50.9 percent) and made 9-of-24 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 12-of-14 from the free-throw line, while the Broncos were 22-of-24.

Cal State LA started well and took a 6-2 lead after 3-pointers from Rogers and Fard Muhammad. A layup by Lewis gave the Golden Eagles a 10-9 lead and a basket by Wright gave the Golden Eagles their final edge at 12-11. A pair of free throws by Fisher made it 14-14 with 10:10 remaining in the half and a basket by Rogers kept the Golden Eagles within 22-21. Cal Poly Pomona, though, went on a 14-0 run to take a 36-21 lead before a basket by Fisher stopped the run.

The Golden Eagles trailed 43-29 at halftime and gave up the first five points of the second half. A layup by Williams got the Golden Eagles on the board in the second half and made it 48-31, but that's as close as the Golden Eagles would get.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Cal State San Bernardino at 3 p.m.
