SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team tried to execute one of its trademark second-half rallies, but hot-shooting Cal State San Bernardino had other ideas.
The Golden Eagles sliced an 18-point second-half deficit to six points, but the Coyotes were able to hang on and post an 81-70 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory in Cousoullis Arena. Cal State LA (9-7, 4-6 CCAA) made 13 of its 3-point attempts, but Cal State San Bernardino (13-3, 8-2 CCAA) shot nearly 64 percent for the game and was able to record the win.
Khalil Williams had 16 points and four steals for the Golden Eagles, while
Fard Muhammad also had 16 points.
Michael Wright also hit double figures with 12 points.
Shea Rax had a game-high 26 points for the Coyotes, while Andres Villa had 21 points.
Ja'Sean Lewis had seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Sean Estes had eight points.
Cal State LA was 25-of-62 overall, while Cal State San Bernardino was 30-of-47 and shot a sizzling 63.8 percent. The Golden Eagles were 13-of-40 from 3-point range, while the Coyotes were 10-of-16. The Golden Eagles were 7-of-12 from the free-throw line, while the Coyotes were 11-of-18. The Coyotes had a 37-25 rebounding edge. Cal State LA forced 20 turnovers, including 13 in the second half when the Golden Eagles collected eight steals.
Cal State LA held early leads and scored the opening basket on a dunk by Lewis. A 3-pointer by Williams and a layup by Muhammad gave the Golden Eagles a 7-3 lead and a layup by Wright gave the Golden Eagles their last lead at 9-8. The Coyotes responded with an 8-0 run and never looked back. Cal State San Bernardino had a 48-32 halftime lead.
After the Coyotes got the opening basket of the second half to take a 50-32 lead, the Golden Eagles steadily worked their way back into the game. The Golden Eagles still trailed, 72-55, before a free throw by Williams, a 3-pointer by
CJ Fisher and a basket by Williams made it 72-61. A 3-pointer by Williams, a layup by Wright and a pair of free throws by Williams got the Golden Eagles within 74-68, with 2:37 to go, but they couldn't get any closer.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home game against Stanislaus State at 7:30 p.m.Â
