Golden Eagles Fall To A Big Second Half By Warriors

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team started well, but Stanislaus State was the team that walked away with a California Collegiate Athletic Association victory Thursday night.

The Golden Eagles scored the first nine points of the game and led by as many as 10 points in the first half, but the Warriors shot 65.4 percent in the second half and took an 85-77 decision in University Gym. Cal State LA (9-8, 4-7 CCAA) saw its lead trimmed to four points by halftime and surrendered 54 second-half points to Stanislaus State (11-5, 7-4 CCAA).

Stanislaus State took control of the game with its sizzling second-half shooting. The Warriors were 17-of-26 overall and made 6-of-10 from 3-point range. Cal State LA shot 43.3 percent in the second half (13-of-30), but was just 3-of-15 from 3-point range.

Khalil Williams and Fard Muhammad had 15 points each for the Golden Eagles, while Ja'Sean Lewis had a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double. 

Darius Scott had 21 points to lead four Warriors in double figures.

Michael-Isaiah Ajiboye scored nine points for the Golden Eagles, while Shacquille Dawkins and Sean Estes had seven points each.

Cal State LA shot 42.9 percent for the game (24-of-56) and just 28 percent from 3-point range (7-of-25). Stanislaus State shot 43.6 percent for the game (24-of-55) and was 7-of-21 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 22-of-33 from the free-throw line, while the Warriors were 30-of-40.

Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 36-32, and committed 10 turnovers to nine for the Warriors.

Cal State LA opened up a 9-0 lead to start the game thanks to a pair of free throws from Muhammad, two from Ajiboye, baskets from Estes and Williams and a free throw by Muhammad. A 3-pointer by Williams gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the night, 29-19, but the Golden Eagles led by only four points at halftime, 35-31.

Three-pointers by Williams and Kikuchi gave the Golden Eagles a 41-35 lead, but the Warriors took control of the game with a 15-0 run that gave them a 50-41 lead with 14:33 to go.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 16 points with eight minutes to go, but got to within seven points at 70-63 with 4:54 to go after a basket by Lewis and to within 79-73 after a three-point play by Dawkins with 1:48 to go. They got to within five points after a pair of free throws by Lewis, but just 28 seconds remaining in the game.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Humboldt State.
