CHICO -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team came up short Saturday night in Chico.
The Golden Eagles shot just 33.9 percent and fell to the Wildcats, 87-62, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in Acker Gym. Cal State LA (10-9, 5-8 CCAA) lost for the second time this season to the Wildcats (15-3, 10-2 CCAA). Cal State LA is tied for eighth in the conference, while Chico State is in second.
Fard Muhammad had a team-high 15 points for the Golden Eagles, while
Khalil Williams had 12 points.
Malik Duffy had a game-high 21 points for Chico State.
Jordan Rogers had nine points and six rebounds and
Bailey Kikuchi had eight points.
Cal State LA was 21-of-62 overall (33.9 percent) and was 8-of-30 from 3-point range (26,7 percent). Chico State was 28-of-62 (45.2 percent) and 10-of-23 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 12-of-18 from the free-throw line, while the Wildcats were 21-of-30;. Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 48-34, and committed just seven turnovers while Chico State made eight.
The Golden Eagles took a 2-0 lead on a layup by Williams and tied the game at 5-5 after a 3-pointer by
Michael Wright. Chico State, though, went on an 8-0 run and never looked back. The Wildcats led 41-25 at halftime and maintained their advantage the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 3 p.m.
