LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team found itself on the right side of a thriller against Cal State Dominguez Hills for a second time on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles got a go-ahead from free throw from
Shacquille Dawkins with seven seconds left and survived a pair of frantic last-second bids by the Toros and held on for a scintillating 65-64 California Collegiate Athletic Association win in University Gym. Cal State LA (11-9, 6-8 CCAA) moved into sole possession of eighth place in the conference with the victory with eight games remaining. The top eight qualify for the CCAA Tournament.
It was Cal State LA's second thrilling win this season against Cal State Dominguez Hills. Earlier this season in Carson, a miraculous put-back by
Khalil Williams in the final seconds lifted the Golden Eagles to a 66-65 win in the Torodome.
The Golden Eagles led for most of the first half and built a 12-point lead with 18:49 to go. Cal State LA still held an 11-point lead with 9:41 to go before the bottom fell out. The Toros went on an 18-0 run and seemingly took control with a 60-53 to go.
The Golden Eagles, though, fought their way back and a pair of free throws by
Michael Wright, a basket by
Khalil Williams and two more free throws by Wright to the Golden Eagles to within 62-59. A Dawkins steal led to a game-tying 3-pointer by
Ja'Sean Lewis with 58 seconds to go. Two free throws by Lewis tied it again at 64-64 and a defensive rebound by Lewis and an offensive rebound by Lewis led to Dawkins being fouled while shooting with seven seconds to go.
Dawkins missed the first, but made the second for the lead and the Golden Eagles then had to weather a pair of shots near the rim, the last one right before the buzzer, to hold onto the win.
Fard Muhammad led the Golden Eagles with 14 points, while Wright finished with 11 points and
Jordan Rogers finished with 10.
Colten Kresl had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Toros (9-11, 5-9 CCAA), while Andrew Whitsett had 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Cal State LA shot 33.9 percent overall (20-of-59) and was 12-of-40 from 3-point range. Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 31.7 percent (20-of-63) and was 9-of-28 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 13-of-15 from the free-throw line, while the Toros were 15-of-20. Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 56-25, but also committed only seven turnovers to 19 for the Toros.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a Homecoming game against Cal State Monterey Bay at 7:30 p.m. Â
