Golden Eagles Complete A Good Week With Big Win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team put in another good effort at home and was rewarded with a big California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.

The Golden Eagles had four players score in double figures and recorded a well-played 80-74 win over Humboldt State Saturday in University Gym. Cal State LA (8-10, 6-6 CCAA) won for the fourth time in its last five games and moved into eighth place in the conference, just one game back of Cal Poly Pomona and Stanislaus State.

Cal State LA trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half, but got to within three points by halftime and outscored Humboldt State (9-8, 5-7 CCAA), 48-39, in the second half. The Golden Eagles shot 66.7 percent in the fourth quarter (8-of-12) and hit all eight of their free throw attempts.

Sydney Bordonaro had a game-high 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures. Rachael DiRegolo had 18 points and 11 rebounds, Mackenzie Barnes had 12 points and Nicole Flennaugh had 11 points.

Humboldt State also had four players reach double figures and was led by Tyra Turner, who finished with 17. Gabrielle Carbajal and Madeline Hatch had 15 points each.

Alyssa Fisher had nine points and a career-high 11 assists for the Golden Eagles, while Jo Ana Adams had six points and four rebounds.

Cal State LA shot 51.7 percent for the game (30-of-58) and was an efficient 4-of-8 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were a perfect 16-of-16 from the free-throw line. Humboldt State shot 40 percent for the game (28-of-70) and 10-of-34 from 3-point range. The Lumberjacks were 8-of-9 from the free-throw line.

Cal State LA had a 37-30 rebounding edge and committed 18 turnovers to 14 for Humboldt State.

The Golden Eagles trailed, 27-17, with five minutes to go in the second quarter, but a 3-pointer by Flennaugh, a basket by Bordonaro and a pair of free throws by DiRegolo sliced the lead to 27-24 and the game stayed close the rest of the way.

The Golden Eagles trailed at halftime, 35-32, but got baskets by DiRegolo, Barnes and Flennaugh to take a 38-35 lead. Humboldt State rallied to take a 51-47 lead, but a pair of baskets by Adams and baskets by Flennaugh and DiRegolo keyed an 8-0 run and Cal State LA took a 55-54 lead into the fourth period.

The game was tied for a final time at 61-61 and Cal State LA held a narrow 65-63 lead before a basket by Jolene Robinson and a big 3-pointer by Fisher gave the Golden Eagles a 70-63 edge with two minutes to play. The Golden Eagles hit all eight free throws in the final 45 seconds to secure the win.

Cal State LA will return to action next Saturday with a road game at Chico State.
