LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team picked up a big California Collegiate Athletic Association victory Thursday night over Stanislaus State.
The Golden Eagles overcame a slow start and finished with a flurry in a 69-60 win over the Warriors in University Gym. Cal State LA allowed the first seven points of the game, but came roaring back to take the lead by the end of the first quarter and never looked back.
Cal State LA (7-10, 5-6 CCAA) won for the third time in its last four games and pulled into a three-way tie for eighth place in the CCAA, just one game back of the Warriors (8-8, 6-5 CCAA). The top eight teams will qualify for the conference tournament.
Nicole Flennaugh led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 17 points and six assists, while
Sydney Bordonaro had 13 points and eight rebounds.
Mackenzie Barnes had 13 points and eight rebounds and
Alyssa Fisher had 13 points and seven rebounds.
Kyanna Davis had 16 points for the Warriors.
Jo Ana Adams had eight points and six rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
Rachael DiRegolo had a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with four points and four blocks.
Cal State LA shot 43.1 percent for the game (22-of-51) and was 7-of-20 from 3-point range. Stanislaus State shot just 27.3 percent (18-of-66) and was just 3-of-24 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 18-of-30 from the free-throw line, while the Warriors were 21-of-31.
Cal State LA had a 45-38 rebounding edge and won despite committing 26 turnovers to 18 for the Warriors.
A 3-pointer by Bordonaro stopped a game-opening 7-0 run by the Warriors and a pair of free throws by Bordonaro, a layup by Fisher and a 3-pointer by Flennaugh pushed the Golden Eagles ahead, 16-11. A free throw by Adams made it 20-13 and the Golden Eagles settled for a 20-15 lead after one quarter.
A basket by Barnes gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead at 27-17 and Cal State LA held a 33-28 halftime lead.
After the Warriors got the opening basket of the second half to make it 33-30, a 3-pointer by Fisher, a pair of free throws by Flennaugh and a basket by Barnes opened the lead back to 40-30. A basket by DiRegolo and four straight points by Barnes gave the Golden Eagles a 46-33 edge late in the third.
A 3-pointer by Flennaugh gave the Golden Eagles a 49-36 lead and a basket by Adams gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead at 57-39 with 4:55 to play. Cal State LA maintained at least an eight-point edge the rest of the way.Â
Cal State LA will return to action with a home game on Saturday against Humboldt State.
