SURPRISE, ARIZ. -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team sizzled in the heat Friday at the PacWest Conference Championships.
The Golden Eagles won the doubles point and took three of the four completed singles matches to beat Concordia-Irvine, 4-1, at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex. With temperatures around 100 degrees, the Golden Eagles were able to beat the Eagles for the second time in three meetings this season. The two teams split 4-3 decisions in the previous two matches.
Cal State LA was seeded seventh in the tournament, while Concordia-Irvine was seeded sixth.
The Golden Eagles took the doubles points thanks to a pair of wins.
Berta Acero Garcia and
Chelsey Ruiz prevailed over Lisa Suzuki and Samantha Shuster, 7-5, at No. 2 doubles and
Luciana Di Laura and
Mariko Sagara beat Taylor Lau and Haley Diefenbach at No. 3 doubles, 6-1.Â
Sagara got Cal State LA's second point with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Ghada Al-ajelly at No. 6 singles, Ruiz got the third point with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Shuster at No. 5 singles and
Isabella Lopez clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Suzuki at No. 3 singles.Â
Cal State LA will finish its season with a match for fifth place in the conference against Point Loma on Saturday at 1 p.m.
