LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team wound up on the right side of a slugfest Saturday afternoon at Reeder Field.
The Golden Eagles collected 19 hits, including home runs from
Spencer Sundahl and
Nate Alam, and held on for a 15-10 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest. The two teams have combined for 49 runs while splitting the first two games.
Jordan Myrow had a huge game at the plate and went 4-for-4 with five RBI, while Alam was 2-for-3 with four RBI. Sundahl went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI, while
Tyler Odekirk went 3-for-6 with two runs and one RBI.
Cal State LA (5-12, 4-9 CCAA) scored three runs in each of the first two innings to take a 6-5 lead and then broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning that made it 15-5. Cal State Dominguez Hills (6-10, 5-9 CCAA) scored twice in the seventh and three times in the eighth to pull to within 15-10, but couldn't get any closer.
Pierson Loska and Joe Canepa hit seventh-inning home runs for the Toros.
Saxon Andross gave up five runs on five hits over the first two innings, but allowed only one hit over his final four innings. He retired the last 11 batters he faced and ended up with a strong six-inning performance to pick up his first win of the season.
Angel Lerma allowed home runs on two of the first four pitches he threw, but settled down and battled through the final three innings to pick up his second save.
Cal State LA put together three-run rallies in the first two innings to overcome early Cal State Dominguez Hills leads. After the Toros scored twice in the first inning, the Golden Eagles struck for three in the bottom of the inning. Odekirk scored on a wild pitch and Alam delivered a two-run single for the lead.
The Toros regained the lead with three runs in the top of the second, but the Golden Eagles matched those three runs in the bottom of the frame.
Alec Daily singled in one run and Myrow doubled in two to give the Golden Eagles a 6-5 edge.
Cal State LA made it 8-5 in the fourth with a two-run single by Myrow and extended the lead to 10-5 in the fifth on a towering two-run home run to right by Sundahl, his third of the season. Alam hit a two-run home run as part of a five-run sixth inning that gave the Golden Eagles their 15-5 lead.
Cal State LA will conclude the series with a doubleheader at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday beginning at noon.
