LOS ANGELES -- It took awhile for Cal State LA's women's basketball team to get into gear, but it was a case of better late than never Saturday in University Gym.
The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 14 points, but outscored Cal State Monterey Bay, 25-13, in the fourth quarter to pull out a 73-64 win in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. Cal State LA (8-13, 5-12 CCAA) shot 50 percent in the second half to overcome a determined effort by Cal State Monterey Bay (0-21, 0-17 CCAA).
Madison Adams scored a game-high 22 points for the Golden Eagles and made 8-of-11 shots. She also had four rebounds, two assists and three steals.
Chiderah Uzowuru had a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double and five steals and
Christine Delapina had 12 points, seven rebounds and eight assists.
Chyna Davis had 16 points for the Otters, while Brianna Tucker scored 15 and Yolanda Ealy had 12 points and six rebounds.
Jo Ana Adams had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Rachael DiRegolo had six points, four rebounds and three blocks.
Cal State LA shot 41.3 percent overall (26-of-63) and made only 2-of-11 from 3-point range, both by
Madison Adams, who was 2-for-4. Cal State Monterey Bay shot 33.8 percent (22-of-65) and was 8-of-23 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 19-of-25 from the free-throw line, including 13-of-16 in the second half, while Cal State Monterey Bay was 12-of-15.
Cal State LA had a 45-37 rebounding edge.
The Otters had an outstanding first half and opened up a 35-21 lead with 2:25 to go in the second quarter. The Golden Eagles, scored the last nine points of the first half and the first seven of the third quarter to erase the deficit. Uzowuru started the late run in the second quarter with a basket and followed with a steal and layup. A three-point play by
Jo Ana Adams and a pair of free throws by
Rachael DiRegolo made it 35-30 at halftime.
The Golden Eagles opened the second half with a three-point play by Uzowuru, an offensive rebound basket by
Rachael DiRegolo and a fastbreak layup by DiRegolo to give Cal State LA a 37-35 lead and complete what was a 16-0 run. Cal State Monterey Bay, though responded by scoring the next eight points to regain the lead and led by as many as nine points in the period. The Golden Eagles scored the final six points of the period to make it 51-48 entering the fourth.
Cal State LA opened the fourth quarter by scoring the first eight points and led the rest of the way. A jumper by
Jolene Robinson cut the deficit to one point and a basket by
Rebeccah DiRegolo gave the Golden Eagles the lead. Baskets by
Madison Adams and Delapina gave the Golden Eagles a 56-51 lead with eight minutes to go.
The Golden Eagles maintained just a one-point lead before baskets by Uzowuru and Delapina pushed the advantage to 62-57. Cal State Monterey Bay made it 62-58, but Delapina hit a pair of free throws and Cal State LA was 9-of-10 from the free-throw line over the final 1:25 of the contest.
Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday with an exhibition game at Pepperdine.
