MALIBU -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team took a break from California Collegiate Athletic Association play in an exhibition game at Pepperdine.
The Golden Eagles battled in an 80-56 loss to the Waves on Tuesday night. Cal State LA led early in the opening quarter and trailed by a manageable 12 points at halftime. The game counted as a regular-season contest for Pepperdine (16-8) and an exhibition game for the Golden Eagles.
Alyssa Fisher scored a team-high 18 points and
Chiderah Uzowuru had 17 points.
Yasmine Robinson-Bacote had a game-high 25 points for Pepperdine, while Malia Bambrick had 17.
Mackenzie Barnes had eight points and five rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA was 21-of-66 overall and just 1-of-9 from 3-point range. Pepperdine shot 46.8 percent (34-of-73) overall and was just 6-of-21 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 13-of-19 from the free-throw line, while Pepperdine was 6-of-10. Cal State LAÂ was out-rebounded, 56-31, and committed only 10 turnovers to 14 for Pepperdine.
Cal State LA got early baskets from Barnes,
Rachael DiRegolo and Uzowuru to take a 6-4 lead before Pepperdine made a run and took the lead for good. A free throw by Fisher kept the deficit at 15-11 and the Golden Eagles trailed after one period, 18-11.
A basket by Uzowuru cut it to 18-13 early in the second quarter, but Pepperdine went on another run and ultimately opened up a 34-22 lead at halftime.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road game at Cal State San Marcos.
