SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's women's basketball had an impressive finish, but still came up short in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest at Cal State San Marcos.
The Golden Eagles closed the game on a 14-0 run in a 58-49 loss to the Cougars Thursday in The Sports Center. Cal State LA (8-14, 5-13 CCAA) was playing in its first contest since an exhibition game at Pepperdine on Tuesday.
Chiderah Uzowuru had 10 points and four rebounds, while
Rachael DiRegolo just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Emma Fogel had a game-high 15 points for Cal State San Marcos (12-9, 9-8 CCAA).
Alyssa Fisher had nine points for the Golden Eagles, while
Sacha Griffin had a season-high seven points.
Cal State LA shot just 31.7 percent for the game (20-of-63) and made only 1-of-9 from 3-point range. Cal State San Marcos shot 35.5 percent (22-of-62) and knocked down 3-of-12 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 8-of-14 from the free-throw line, while Cal State San Marcos was 11-of-13. The Golden Eagles had a 48-38 rebounding edge and committed 22 turnovers to 16 for the Cougars.
The Golden Eagles got off to a good start and back-to-back baskets by Uzowuru staked them to a 4-0 lead. Baskets by Fisher and
Jo Ana Adams after a steal by
Madison Adams gave the Golden Eagles a 12-10 lead, but the Cougars scored the last five points of the period to take a 15-10 lead after one quarter.
The Cougars opened the second quarter by scoring the first eight points before Cal State LA got a basket from
Kassie Krueger. A layup by DiRegolo made it 33-20 at halftime.
Mackenzie Barnes scored the final basket of the third quarter to make it 47-32 after three quarters.
Cal State LA, despite being down by large margins in the fourth quarter, finished the game well.
Jolene Robinson started the game-ending run, Griffin scored five straight points,Â
Rachael DiRegolo scored five straight points and
Christine Delapina scored a basket to make it a nine-point margin at the end.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday at UC San Diego.Â
