LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team had a large Homecoming crowd on its feet during an electrifying second-half comeback, but things didn't go nearly as well in a frustrating overtime period.
The Golden Eagles erased a 16-point deficit with the crowd urging them on, but Cal State LA went empty in overtime and fell to Cal State East Bay, 83-73, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in University Gym. Cal State LA (12-10, 8-8 CCAA) missed an opportunity to pull to within two games of second-place Cal State East Bay (17-5, 12-4 CCAA)Â with the loss.
Shacquille Dawkins had a game-high 22 points for the Golden Eagles, while
Jordan Rogers had 18 points and three rebounds.
Anthony Fitzpatrick added eight points.
Ant Navarrete had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead four Pioneers in double figures.
Bailey Kikuchi had five rebounds and five assists to go along with three points for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA shot just 31.9 percent for the game (23-of-72) and was 14-of-43 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles got back into the game with their long-range shooting in the second half, knocking down 10 of 22 attempts. Cal State East Bay also made 23 baskets by needed only 44 shots and shot 52.3 percent. The Pioneers were 9-of-15 from 3-point range (9-of-15). The Golden Eagles were 13-of-19 from the free-throw line, while the Pioneers were 28-of-34.
Cal State East Bay had a 44-29 rebounding edge, while Cal State LA forced 27 turnovers and committed 16.
The Golden Eagles got off to a quick start and scored the first six points of the game after a free throw by Rogers, a layup by Rogers and a 3-pointer by Dawkins. A layup by
Devin Means gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead at 16-9 with 11:34 remaining in the half. Cal State LA still led, 18-14, after a dunk by
Ja'Sean Lewis, but the Pioneers went on a 13-3 run to take the lead and ultimately took a 35-25 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles fell behind, 44-28, with 16:20 to go before going on a 16-2 run that had the fans on their feet. A 3-pointer by Kikuchi started the run, Rogers hit back-to-back 3-pointers,
Jihad Woods hit a pair of free throws, Dawkins hit a jumper in the lane and then nailed a 3-pointer to make it 46-44 with 11:57 to go.
The Golden Eagles took their first lead of the second half after a 3-pointer by Muhammad and that was followed by a 3-pointer by Rogers that made it 58-54 with seven minutes left. Fitzpatrick hit a 3-pointer to put the Golden Eagles ahead, 66-64, with 3:22 remaining and a pair of free throws by Dawkins made it 68-65 with 2:47 to go. Cal State East Bay tied the game with three free throws and took a 70-68 lead with 15 seconds to go after a layup by Nai Carlisle.
Dawkins, though, tied the game with an acrobatic layup with nine seconds to play and the Pioneers were unable to get off a final shot before the buzzer.
The Golden Eagles, after their dynamic second half, went flat in the overtime period and missed all six of their field-goal attempts and three of their six free-throws. The Golden Eagles were outscored in overtime, 13-3.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with an afternoon game against Cal State Monterey Bay.
