AZUSA -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team had its second four-hour marathon battle in as many days and this one ended with a hard-fought loss as well.
The Golden Eagles (3-4) gave nationally-ranked Azusa Pacific all it could handle in a 4-3Â defeat Thursday afternoon in Azusa. Cal State LA was coming off a similar 4-3 loss to Concordia on Wednesday.
The match came down to a thrilling three-set match at No. 2 singles, where Azusa Pacific's Anna Savchenko outlasted Cal State LA's
Luciana Di Laura in a third-set tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6.
The Golden Eagles won three of the five singles contests that were completed. Cal State LA's
Amanda Schneider was forced to retire at No. 1 singles due to injury during the first set.
Cal State LA picked up three singles wins.
Berta Acero Garcia beat Jacky Wagner, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles,
Mariko Sagara beat Katia Betancourt at No. 5 singles, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 and
Chelsey Ruiz beat Audrey Stewart at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-3.
Cal State LA juggled its doubles lineup, but dropped the doubles point. Schneider and
Isabella Lopez fell at No. 1 doubles, 7-6, to Kara Hinton and Wagner, Di Laura and Ruiz fell at No. 2 doubles, 6-4, to Savchenko and April Wong and Acero Garcia and Sagara lost to No. 3 doubles, 6-2, to Petra Ivankovic and Stewart.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home match against UC San Diego.
