Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Golden Eagles' Historic Season Ends In Championship Game

PITTSBURGH, PA -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team saw its historic season come to end Saturday, just short of perfection.

The Golden Eagles saw their season-long unbeaten streak snapped in the NCAA Division II Championship Game when Charleston (W.V.) scored one goal in each half of a 2-0 victory on a rainy day in Highmark Stadium. Cal State LA (19-1-3) carried a remarkable 22-match unbeaten streak and a No. 1 seed into Saturday's match and was making the program's first appearance in a national championship game since 1981.

The Golden Eagles conceded an early goal in the 10th minute after a rare defensive miscue, but bounced back impressively and came close several times to tying the match before Charleston (22-2-1) picked up its second goal in the 74th minute. Cal State LA had a flurry of chances over the final 16 minutes in attempt to slice the deficit in half, but Charleston's top-rated defense recorded its 17th shutout of the season. Charleston won its second national championship in the past three seasons and was appearing in its fourth national title game in the past six years.

Cal State LA, the Super Region 4 and California Collegiate Athletic Association champions, set new program records for highest winning percentage (.870) and most shutouts (15), while posting the most victories in a season since the 1981 team went 20-3.

The national title game featured the top two defenses in the country and the battle between the two sides didn't disappoint. Charleston finished the season with an 87-8 edge in goals and Cal State LA had a 50-10 advantage, yet scoring opportunities were tough to come by on Saturday. Cal State LA allowed more than one goal in a game for only the second time this season.

Freddy Tracey scored both goals for Charleston, one after coming up with a loose ball in the box and shooting into an empty net and the second coming after he flicked a centering pass from Jesus Cabanas just inside the far post from point-blank range.

Charleston had a 15-7 edge in shots and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. Alvaro Dean made six saves for Charleston, including some key stops late, while Alexander Brems made three saves for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA had its best scoring chance in the first half courtesy of Carl Solli, who stepped up nicely in the postseason for the Golden Eagles. Solli made a tremendous move to get around a defense in the box, but his blast to the near post was deftly saved by Dean.

Morten Bjoershol, the CCAA Defender of the Year, took a hard shot from about 25 yards out that Dean was able to stop and then recover in time to grab the rebound before an onrushing Solli to get to it.

Charleston dodged a bullet in the 61st minute when Dean bobbled the ball after a misplay in the box, but he was able to grab it before speedy David Elizaga could get to it.

After Tracey's second goal in the 74th minute made it 2-0, the Golden Eagles battled desperately to get on the board. Tim Klefisch got the ball to Bjoershol in range for a good opportunity, but Dean made the stop. Carlos Zarate split a pair of defenders and slid a pass to Bjoershol, who was just offside with room to run.

Elizaga took a hard shot from the right side that was saved by Dean and the ball sailed high in the air and out to Jose Orellana, whose shot from just inside the box sailed over the crossbar.

Elizaga had another good opportunity that was deflected for a corner kick for Cal State LA's final chance, but Charleston was able to run out the remaining time.

Leonardo Nogueira, Tim Klefisch and Carl Solli were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
