Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Golden Eagles Do Their Part And Reach Tourney!

ARCATA -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team knew it needed three things to happen to get into the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament and the Golden Eagles made sure they did their part.

The Golden Eagles got a big second-half goal from Valerie Mares and edged the host 'Jacks, 1-0, in the regular-season finale on Saturday at College Creek Field.

That was part one.

Cal State LA (8-6-1, 5-5-1 CCAA) then had to wait and learn the results of the Sonoma State-Cal State San Bernardino and Stanislaus State-Cal State East Bay matches to conclude before learning their conference tournament fate.

The wait was worth it because within a few minutes, Stanislaus State had completed a win over Cal State East Bay and, a few minutes later, Sonoma State had beaten Cal State San Bernardino and the Golden Eagles had clinched the No. 6 seed for the conference tournament. Cal State LA will be making its seventh straight appearance in the conference tourney.

The Golden Eagles took care of business with another solid effort on Saturday. Cal State LA, ranked No. 5 in the most recent NCAA Division II West Region rankings, had a slim 14-13 edge in shots and a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

The Golden Eagles survived a flurry by Humboldt State (4-11-2, 3-9 CCAA) in the 28th minute that included a pair of blocked shots and a team save that kept the game scoreless at halftime.

Cal State LA then got the game's lone goal in the 54th minute. Yaqualin Garcia had a corner kick for the Golden Eagles and shortly thereafter Paulina Chaidez made a pass inside to Mares, who headed the ball into the net for her first goal of the season. The assist was the first of the year for Chaidez.

Amanda Leal made three saves for the Golden Eagles to record the shutout.

Natalie Reynoso and Mares had three shots each, whlie Danya Gutierrez, Nicolette Elliott and Ashtyn Bracamonte had two each.

Cal State LA will play at No. 3 seed Cal Poly Pomona on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in a first-round conference match.
