POMONA -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team fell behind early in its California Collegiate Athletic Association first-round match at Cal Poly Pomona and was unable to advance.
The No. 6 seed Golden Eagles surrendered three first-half goals and fell to No. 3 seed Cal Poly Pomona, 3-1, in a tournament game at Kellogg Stadium. Cal State LA (8-7-1) scored early in the second half and was threatening the rest of the way, but Cal Poly Pomona's defense stood tall and closed out the contest.
Cal Poly Pomona (13-3-3) advances to the semifinals on Friday for a match against No. 2 seed and host UC San Diego.
Cal State LA, which was ranked fifth in last week's NCAA Division II West Region poll, will now keep an eye on the next poll, which will be released on Wednesday and will include weekend wins over San Francisco State and Humboldt State, but not the Tuesday loss at Cal Poly Pomona.
Seven teams will advance to the NCAA Tournament from the West Region. The tournament field will be announced on Monday.
The Golden Eagles fell behind 1-0 on a penalty kick goal by Cal Poly Pomona's Taylor Scott in the 17th minute. Scott made it 2-0 in the 31st minute with her second goal of the game and a goal by Jillian Erwin in the 43rd minute made it 3-0 by halftime.
Danya Gutierrez got the Golden Eagles on the board in the 65th minute following a corner kick. She came up with a loose ball in front of the goal and quickly shot it over Cal Poly Pomona goalkeeper Sydney Williams for her third goal of the season.
Williams finished with seven saves for the Broncos, while
Amanda Leal had five saves for the Golden Eagles.
Gutierrez finished with a match-high four shots for the Golden Eagles, while
Paulina Chaidez had two, both on goal.
Cal State LA was making its seventh straight appearance in the CCAA Tournament and its ninth in the last 11 years.
