Golden Eagles Get Clutch Goal To Advance Past Sonoma

ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team made some history Friday with a big NCAA Division II West Region playoff victory.

The Golden Eagles posted the first road win in NCAA Tournament play in the program's history with a 1-0 victory over host Sonoma State at Seawolf Field. No. 7 seed Cal State LA got a goal in the 88th minute from Danya Gutierrez to pick up the big victory over the tournament's No. 2 seed. Goalkeeper Amanda Leal made a season-high 13 saves, none bigger than a diving stop in the waning seconds to secure the victory.

The victory was just the second overall for the Golden Eagles in NCAA Tournament play and their first since 2011. Cal State LA is making its first appearance in the NCAA playoffs since 2014.

The game was scoreless until Gutierrez picked up her team-leading fourth goal of the season. The play started with a dangerous free kick from Nicolette Elliott that bounced around in the box until Gutierrez fired it through a crowd and under the crossbar for the game-winner.

The Golden Eagles then weathered a spirited effort by the California Collegiate Athletic Association champion Seawolves in the final 2:53. Leal made the last of her 13 saves as the final seconds ran off the clock.

Sonoma State had a 25-9 advantage in shots, but the Golden Eagle defense did a masterful job of making sure that most of the attempts were from distance. The Seawolves also had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Golden Eagles had the best scoring chance in the opening half when Irma Pinzon did an outstanding job of keeping the ball in play near the goal-line and sent a pass into the box. With Sonoma State's goalkeeper out of the goal, Gutierrez sent a shot toward an open goal that was headed out of danger at the last moment by a Seawolf defender.

Cal State LA's Paulina Chaidez also made a strong bid to break the scoreless tie in the 59th minute when she made a strong run through the defense and fired a rising left-footed shot that was saved.

Natalie Reynoso led the Golden Eagles with three shots, while Kimberly Mendez had two shots.

Cal State LA will now advance to face No. 3 seed Western Washington on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Sonoma State. Western Washington advanced with a 1-0 win over Stanislaus State.
