Golden Eagles Fall To Concordia At Biola

LA MIRADA -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team didn't enjoy as much success in the second day of the CCAA/PacWest Challenge at Biola's Chase Gym.

The Golden Eagles struggled offensive and fell to Concordia, 57-48, Saturday afternoon. Cal State LA (1-1) shot just 18.4 in the first half and 24.6 percent for the game and fell short despite forcing 23 turnovers.

Sydney Bordonaro had 12 points and four assists to lead Cal State LA, while Amiete Nyingifa had seven points and 12 rebounds. Alyssa Fisher also had seven points to go along with two assists.

Michaela Vanderklugt had 21 points and 10 rebounds for Concordia (2-0).

Cal State LA made just 18-of-75 field-goal attempts for the game and was just 6-of-28 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were also just 6-of-12 from the free-throw line. Concordia was 22-of-59 from the field (37.3 percent) and 4-of-19 from 3-point range. The Eagles were 9-of-12 from the free-throw line.

Concordia held a 53-47 rebounding edge. Cal State LA forced 23 turnovers while committing 14.

The Golden Eagles took an 8-6 lead on a layup by Fisher late in the first quarter, but Concordia scored the final seven points of the quarter to take a 13-8 lead and never trailed again.

A 3-pointer by Bordonaro sliced the deficit to 19-18 late in the second quarter, but Concordia took a 23-18 lead at halftime.

Cal State LA trailed by as many as 15 points in the third quarter before back-to-back 3-pointers by Fisher and Bordonaro cut into the lead and the Golden Eagles trailed 41-30 entering the final quarter.

A basket by Yesenia Smith made it 44-38 and back-to-back 3-pointers by Nicole Flennaugh made it 50-46 with 1:58 to go, but that's as close as the Golden Eagles would get.

Cal State LA will play its home opener against Cal State San Marcos on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
