Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Golden Eagles Hold On For An Exciting Win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team put on another thrilling show Saturday in the final day of the CCAA/PacWest Challenge.

The Golden Eagles were spectacular while building a 21-point second-half lead, saw that advantage sliced to a single point before pulling away for an entertaining 78-69 win over Biola in University Gym. Cal State LA (1-1) had four players score in double figures as the Golden Eagles rebounded from a season-opening loss to Concordia on Friday.

There was excitement all around Saturday as the first game had a dramatic ending as Concordia edged Cal State San Marcos on a 3-pointer at the buzzer, 68-66.

Shacquille Dawkins had 18 points to lead the way, while Khalil Williams had 13 points. Ja'Sean Lewis had his second straight double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, while Fard Muhammad also reached double figures with 11 points.

Marquise Mosley had 22 points for the Eagles (0-2), while Michael Bagatourian added 19 points.

Michael-Isaiah Ajiboye had nine points and two assists for the Golden Eagles, while CJ Fisher had seven points and two steals.

Cal State LA shot 50 percent on Saturday (30-of-60) and knocked down an impressive 48.3 percent of its 3-point tries (14-of-29). Biola shot 45.6 percent (26-of-57) and was just 6-of-19 from behind the arc. Cal State LA was just 4-of-10 from the free-throw line, while Biola was 11-of-16. Biola had a slim 35-34 rebounding edge, while both teams had 17 turnovers.

The Golden Eagles opened up their first double-digit lead when a dunk by Fisher gave them a 26-16 lead. A 3-pointer by Dawkins gave them their biggest first-half lead at 36-23 and a 3-pointer by Muhammad gave the Golden Eagles a 39-28 halftime lead.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Sean Estes and Williams gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead at 63-42 with 10:52 to go and Cal State LA still had a 20-point lead, 65-45, after a basket by Dawkins with 9:23 to go. Biola, though, went on a 15-0 run over the next three minutes to make things very exciting in the gym.

The lead shrank to just one point, 67-66, before a big 3-pointer by Muhammad boosted the lead back to 70-66. After Biola closed to within 72-69, a layup by Ajiboye and a 3-pointer by Dawkins finally put the game out of reach.

Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday at Azusa Pacific.
