AZUSA -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team posted a signature victory Tuesday night in its first road game of the 2019-20 season.
The Golden Eagles shot 50 percent from 3-point range and outscored Azusa Pacific, 90-82, in a non-conference game in the Felix Events Center. Cal State LA (2-1) won its second straight game, while handing Azusa Pacific (2-1) its first loss of the season.
Shacquille Dawkins poured in a season-high 25 points to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Fard Muhammad had 17 points. Newcomer
Michael Wright had 15 points in his debut for Cal State LA.
Selom Mawugbe had 19 points, 19 rebounds and eight blocks for Azusa Pacific, the defending PacWest champions.
Ja'Sean Lewis had an outstanding overall game for Cal State LA. He scored six points with five rebounds, seven assists and seven blocked shots.
Khalil Williams scored 10 points.
Cal State LA shot 48.3 percent for the game (28-of-58) and was even better from 3-point range, where the Golden Eagles made 15-of-30. Azusa Pacific shot 39.7 percent (27-of-68) and was 10-of-36 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 54-28, but forced 21 turnovers while committing only nine.
The Golden Eagles got off to a tremendous start and built a 20-4 lead out of the gates.
Sean Estes and Dawkins hit 3-pointers to open the game and a layup by Williams gave the Golden Eagles a quick 8-0. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Dawkins gave the Golden Eagles a 16-4 lead and two free throws by
Michael-Isaiah Ajiboye and Wright pushed the advantage to 20-4.
The Cougars, though, made a strong comeback and sliced the lead to 27-24 before the Golden Eagles settled for a 41-35 halftime lead.
A 3-pointer by Wright to open the half gave the Golden Eagles a 44-35 lead, but Azusa Pacific made another big run and took a 50-49 lead. The lead didn't last long, though, because Wright and Estes hit 3-pointers to give the Golden Eagles the lead back. The game was tied twice, at 61-61 and 63-63, before the Golden Eagles got five straight points from Dawkins to take the lead for good. The Golden Eagles used an 11-0 run to extend a 68-65 advantage to 79-65 and put the game away. A 3-pointer by Muhammad gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead, 85-69.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Fresno Pacific at 2 p.m.Â
