Golden Eagles Post A Big Victory Over Gators

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team enjoyed its best offensive showing of the season Thursday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at San Francisco State.

The Golden Eagles scored a season-high five goals and blanked the Gators, 5-0, at Cox Stadium. Cal State LA (7-6-1, 4-5-1 CCAA) bounced back nicely from the agonizing double-overtime loss to UC San Diego on Saturday with a big road win.

It was an important game for the Golden Eagles, who entered the game ranked No. 5 in the NCAA West Region rankings. Cal State LA also remains in the hunt for a spot in the CCAA Tournament.

Danya Gutierrez and Natalie Reynoso scored two goals each, while Paulina Chaidez had the other for Cal State LA. Reynoso also had an assist.

Cal State LA had a 17-11 edge in shots, including a 9-3 advantage in the first half. San Francisco State (2-13-1, 0-11 CCAA) had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

Amanda Leal made six saves in goal for the Golden Eagles, while Hayley Garriott made four saves for the Golden Eagles.

Leslie Ramirez had four shots for Cal State LA, while Chaidez and Gutierrez had three each.

Gutierrez opened the scoring for the Golden Eagles in the 22nd minute with an unassisted goal, her first of the season. Two minutes later, Reynoso took a pass from Kimberly Mendez and drilled a shot just inside the far post and under the crossbar for her second goal of the season. The assist was the first of the season for Mendez.

Chaidez made it 3-0 just two minutes after that when she got a pass from Anahie Duran and drilled a shot from inside the box inside the near post. It was the third goal of the season for Chaidez.

Cal State LA finished the scoring with a two-goal flurry early in the second half. Gutierrez scored her second goal of the game with a nice set-up from Reynoso that left her alone with the goalie in the 53rd minute. Then, just 16 seconds later, Irma Pinzon took a hard shot that was saved by Garriott, but Reynoso got the rebound and knocked it into an empty net.

Cal State LA will conclude conference play on Saturday at Humboldt State at 2 p.m.
