BURNABY, B.C. -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team put forth a strong effort, but came up short Friday night in a non-conference game at Simon Fraser.
In a tight game where neither team grabbed a lead larger than eight points, the Golden Eagles dropped a 69-63 decision to the host school. Cal State LA (1-3) led by as many as five points early, trailed by as many as eight points in the fourth quarter and saw a late comeback bid fall short.
Cal State LA got the margin down to three points in the final minute, but Simon Fraser (3-4) hit its free throws down the stretch to earn the win.
Alyssa Fisher had a strong game for the Golden Eagles and scored a team-high 19 points.
Jo Ana Adams scored 12 points and grabbed four rebounds.
Tayler Drynan had a game-high 21 points for Simon Fraser and was a perfect 11-of-11 from the free-throw line.
Rachael DiRegolo had six points, eight rebounds and seven blocks for the Golden Eagles, while
Sydney Bordonaro had eight points, seven rebounds and four assists.
The Golden Eagles got off to a good start and built a 9-4 lead after a layup by
Amiete Nyingifa and four straight points by Adams gave them a 13-12 lead in the final minute of the first quarter. Simon Fraser, though, scored the final six points of the period to take an 18-13 lead.
Cal State LA tied it at 20-20 following a DiRegolo layup and a layup by Bordonaro gave the Golden Eagles a 24-22 lead. A late 3-pointer by Fisher gave the Golden Eagles a 27-25 lead, but Simon Fraser took a 28-27 advantage at the break.
A pair of free throws by
Rebeccah DiRegolo gave the Golden Eagles their final lead at 47-46 late in the third quarter, but Simon Fraser took a 48-47 lead into the final period and built an eight-point advantage before the Golden Eagles rallied. A pair of free throws by
Rachael DiRegolo made it 66-63, but Simon Fraser hit three free throws down the stretch to account for the final margin.
Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with another game at Simon Fraser beginning at noon.
