LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team turned in a dominating performance Friday night in University Gym.
The Golden Eagles started quickly and never looked back in a 25-18, 25-13, 25-8 victory over Humboldt State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match. Cal State LA (11-5, 7-1 CCAA) won for the ninth time in its last 10 matches and recorded its third straight sweep.
Mickayla Sherman had 13 kills and hit at a .400 percentage, while
Julia Azevedo had 10 kills and hit at a .444 clip.Â
Lenox Loving had eight kills and five digs for Humboldt State (5-10, 1-7 CCAA).Â
Karla Santos had seven kills, two aces and 12 digs, while
Daisy Portillo had six kills and one block.
Shea McGovern had 17 set assists, while
Jeshmarie Suarez had 10 digs.
Cal State LA had a 47-19 edge in kills and hit at a .344 percentage to just .067 for Humboldt State. Cal State LA had seven service aces, including two each from Santos and
Janessa Mata. Cal State LA had a 6-5 edge in blocks.
Cal State LA trailed early, 6-5, but scored five straight points to take the lead for good. Kills by Negron and Portillo, a block by Negron and
Daisy Crenshaw, an ace from
Shelby Grubbs and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles a 10-6 advantage.
Back-to-back kills by Portillo gave the Golden Eagles a 21-14 lead and the Golden Eagles ultimately closed out the set on a kill by Azevedo.
Cal State LA opened up a 9-3 lead in the second set behind the serving of Santos and Suarez and boosted the lead to 20-10 after kills by Sherman and Azevedo and a solo block by Sherman. A kill by Portillo got the Golden Eagles to set point and a bad set ended the frame.
Cal State LA jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the third set behind five straight points during a Suarez serving run that included a pair of kills by Santos and an ace by Suarez. Cal State LA put the match out of reach later in the set during a five-point serving run by Mata, who contributed two aces during the stretch. A kill by Santos and an ace by Negron got the Golden Eagles to match point and a kill by
Victoria Duarte ended the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a match against Sonoma State beginning at 3 p.m.
