LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team had to work extra for its ninth straight win, but it was worth the wait.
Tim Klefisch fired in the game-winner in the 98th minute to lift the Golden Eagles to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Sonoma State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at University Stadium. No. 3 Cal State LA (9-0, 4-0 CCAA) remained unbeaten with the victory, while Sonoma State (4-6-1, 3-3 CCAA) suffered its second straight overtime defeat.
Cal State LA had a 20-7 advantage in shots, but the Seawolves were able to stay in the game with a determined defensive effort that included several blocked shots and deflected passes. Cal State LA also had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Golden Eagles finally secured the three points for the conference standings thanks to a strong push nearing the end of the overtime period.
Leonardo Nogueira started the game-winning play with a pass in the box to
David Elizaga. The ball was deflected past
Carl Solli, who was also in the box, and went to Klefisch, who drilled a shot inside the near post, sending the Golden Eagles into celebration.
Alexander Brems made one save for the Golden Eagles and it was a good one. He made a diving stop of a shot by Sean Rohane in the second half.
Klefisch had a match-high five shots, while Ramon Hoffman had three.
Cal State LA had an 8-4 edge in shots in the first half and a 10-3 advantage in the second half.
Cal State LA will play its next four games on the road, beginning with a big match with Cal State San Bernardino in San Bernardino at 12:30 p.m.
