Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 2 Golden Eagles Remain Unbeaten With 1-1 Tie

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team remained unbeaten through its first 10 games after a hard-fought 1-1 tie with Cal State San Bernardino.

The Golden Eagles got a clutch second-half goal from Daniel Simonis to even the score and put forth an impressive performance in the two overtime periods, but couldn't get the game-winner. No. 2 Cal State LA (9-0-1, 4-0-1 CCAA) had an 18-8 advantage in shots against No. 13 Cal State San Bernardino (7-1-2, 4-1-1 CCAA).

It was a contentious match that featured a total of nine yellow cards and one red.

The Golden Eagles were able to tie the game in the 85th minute after pressuring the short-handed Coyotes for most of the second half. David Elizaga sent a ball into a congested box and Manuel Garcia got the ball to Simonis, who drilled a shot just inside the far post.

Cal State LA had a 9-0 edge in shots in the second half and a 4-1 advantage in the two overtime periods. The Golden Eagles had a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks, including a 5-0 edge in the overtimes.

The Golden Eagles had a pair of outstanding chances to win the game in regulation and two more in overtime. Tim Klefisch had a good look that went wide in the 87th minute and Elizaga took a hard shot that required a nifty kick save from Cal State San Bernardino goalkeeper Jacob Huber to keep out. Elizaga got the rebound, but his second attempt went high.

Simonis had a shot through traffic in the box that was headed to the goal, but a Cal State San Bernardino defender headed the ball away at the last second to keep the game tied.

Leonardo Nogueira had a good shot in the second overtime that went just wide from outside the box and Carl Solli had a bicycle kick from close range go just high in the last few minutes.

Cal State LA fell behind, 1-0, in the 12th minute when Cal State San Bernardino's Francisco Sierra drilled in a free kick from outside the box perfectly inside the near post.

Elizaga and Solli had five shots each for the Golden Eagles, while Simonis had four. Alexander Brems made a pair of saves for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a game at Cal Poly Pomona at 2 p.m.
