Golden Eagles Come Up Short Down The Stretch

ARCATA -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team put together another impressive second-half rally Thursday night, but Humboldt State rallied last in a key California Collegiate Athletic Association battle.

The Golden Eagles erased a 14-point deficit and pulled even with two minutes to play, but the 'Jacks scored the final eight points of the game to pull out an 84-76 win. Cal State LA (9-6, 5-4 CCAA) was ranked eighth in the West Region in the most recent D2SIDA rankings, while Humboldt State (12-5, 6-3 CCAA) was ranked 10th.

The Golden Eagles evened the game at 76-76 after an explosive 16-4 run erased a 72-60 deficit. Humboldt State rebounded, though, with a game-deciding 8-0 run to remain unbeaten at home.

Devin Means scored 17 points to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures. Jordan Rogers scored 12 points, while Ja'Sean Lewis and Anthony Fitzpatrick scored 10 points each.

Justin Everett and Jackson Strong had 21 points each for Humboldt State.

Shacquille Dawkins had nine points and Fard Muhammad had eight points for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA shot 43.3 percent (26-of-60), while Humboldt State shot 51.9 percent (27-of-52). The Golden Eagles were 14-of-33 from 3-point range, while the 'Jacks were 11-of-24. Cal State LA was 10-of-14 from the free-throw line, while Humboldt State was 19-of-24.

Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 34-28 and committed 16 turnovers to 17 for Humboldt State.

The Golden Eagles took an early lead after a basket by Brandon Hitchman and a 3-pointer by Rogers staked them to a 10-4 advantage. A Fitzpatrick basket made it 12-7, but the 'Jacks scored the next seven points to erase the deficit. A basket by Jihad Woods tied it at 14-14 and a 3-pointer by Rogers tied it at 17-17. A 3-pointer by Dawkins kept the Golden Eagles down by just one point at 24-23 and a layup by Fitzpatrick kept the deficit at 26-25, but the 'Jacks were able to open up a 38-33 halftime lead.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Means and Lewis gave the Golden Eagles their final lead of the game, 39-38, but the 'Jacks went on a 14-0 run to open up a double-digit advantage. Trailing by 12 at 72-60, the Golden Eagles scored five quick points on a layup by Lewis and a 3-pointer by Dawkins. A 3-pointer by Muhammad made it 76-71 and a basket by Means made it 76-73. A layup by Lewis was followed by a free throw by Fitzpatrick to tie it at 76-76 with 2:18 to go, but the Golden Eagles went scoreless the rest of the way.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday at Chico State.
