Golden Eagles Surge Past Gators For Big Win

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team came up with a big performance on Friday to complete an important week of California Collegiate Athletic Association competition.

The Golden Eagles erased a 1-0 halftime deficit and beat San Francisco State, 2-1, in an important conference matchup at Cox Stadium. Cal State LA (5-3-1, 3-2-1 CCAA) pulled ahead of the Gators (4-4-1, 2-2-1 CCAA) and into a tie for second place in the conference race with 10 points.

Despite playing their fourth game in eight days, the Golden Eagles had a tremendous second-half performance to turn the tide. Cal State LA enjoyed a 9-1 edge in shots in the second period, including goals from Adyson Willett and Anahie Duran. The Golden Eagles had a 15-5 advantage for the game.

Cal State LA also enjoyed a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks, including a 7-2 edge in the second half.

After San Francisco State took a quick 1-0 lead on a rebound goal by Tami Kwong in the 17th minute, the Golden Eagles got the equalizer after a corner kick early in the second half. Yaqualin Garcia took the corner kick and sent a beautiful ball into the box, where Willett went up to head it in for the tying goal.

Then Duran, who got her first goal of the season in the 2-0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Wednesday, put the Golden Eagles ahead in the 78th minute with her second goal. She took a nice pass from Leslie Ramirez and beat the goalkeeper in a 1-on-1 situation and fired a shot off the left post. The ball spun back over the goal-line for the game-winning goal.

Cal State LA's defense took it from there and completed an outstanding effort. San Francisco State managed only five shots and just one over the final 45 minutes.

Adriana Maldonado made four saves for the Golden Eagles, while San Francisco State goalkeeper Nicki Rucki made nine saves.

Duran had a game-high four shots, while Willett and Paulina Chaidez had three shots each.

Cal State LA will return to action with a home game against Cal State East Bay on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
