Golden Eagles Settle For 0-0 Draw With Pioneers

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team had another strong defensive performance on Thursday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match against Cal State East Bay, but so did the Pioneers.

The Golden Eagles and Pioneers battled to a scoreless draw at University Stadium with each team earning a point after the 0-0 tie. Cal State LA (6-3-2, 3-2-2 CCAA) stretched its unbeaten streak to three matches, but saw a two-game winning streak ended. Cal State East Bay (5-4-2, 0-3-2 CCAA) earned its second draw in five conference matches.

Both goalkeepers were strong. Cal State LA's Adriana Maldonado made five saves, including a stop right on the doorstep of the goal early in the second half. Cal State East Bay goalie Briana Vasquez-Ortiz made seven saves, including a sensational stop on a brilliant scoring chance from Cal State LA's Ashtyn Bracamonte that seemed like a certain goal.

Cal State LA had a 19-15 edge in shots and had its best stretch in the second half. The Golden Eagles had a 13-5 advantage in the second period, but the Pioneers showed more energy in the two overtime periods and had a 6-1 advantage.

Cal State LA also had an edge in corner kicks, 11-3, including a 6-0 advantage in the opening half.

Cal State East Bay's best chance at scoring came in the second half when Maldonado stood strong and kept a close-range bid from Lauren McDougal out of the goal. That led to a Pioneer corner kick, but the Golden Eagles cleared it away.

Bracamonte had probably the game's best chance when she rifled a shot from the left side of the box that Vasquez-Ortiz, who came out to play the angle, was able to miraculously deflect away from the goal with about 18 minutes to go in the game.

Kimberly Mendez had a good look after getting to a corner kick from Yaqualin Garcia, but her shot from close-range went just over the crossbar.

Paulina Chaidez had a team-high four shots for the Golden Eagles, while Tatiana Zuvic had three shots. Bracamonte, Meranda Salazar and Irma Pinzon had two shots each.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home match against Cal State Monterey Bay at 11:30 a.m.
