Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Golden Eagles Strike For An Overtime Winner

TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team worked overtime for an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Stanislaus State.

A quick counter-attack after a pair of Stanislaus State corner kicks ended with a beautiful game-winning goal from newcomer Leonardo Nogueira and lifted the Golden Eagles to a 1-0 victory over the Warriors Sunday on Warrior Field. Cal State LA (5-1, 2-0 CCAA), ranked 20th in the nation, had a 19-4 advantage in shots and finally subdued a stern challenge from Stanislaus State (3-3, 0-2 CCAA).

The end came after the Golden Eagles, who picked up their fifth shutout in six games this season, successfully defended two Stanislaus State corner kicks early in the overtime period. Jorge Chavez got the game-deciding play started with a booming kick downfield that was controlled by Daniel Simonis, who deftly touched the ball over to Nogueira. The junior transfer from Cal State Dominguez Hills got the nice pass and sent a perfect shot inside the far post for his second goal of the season.

Cal State LA had an 18-3 advantage in shots during regulation and surrendered only one shot on goal for the game. Goalkeeper Alexander Brems made that save and was also strong on both corner kicks for his fifth shutout.

Nogueira led the Golden Eagles with four shots, while Eddie Leon had three. Tim Klefisch, Breki Einarsson and Carlos Zarate had two shots each.

In their first two conference games, on the road at Chico State on Friday and Stanislaus State on Sunday, the Golden Eagles outshot their opponents, 29-7, and allowed only three shots on goal in the two games.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home game against Humboldt State at 4:30 p.m.
