LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team got some outstanding pitching and clutch hitting to squeeze out a win over Cal State Dominguez Hills Thursday night in the opener of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series.
Angel Lerma and
Nate Adams combined for some stout pitching on the mound and the Golden Eagles pushed across what turned out to be the winning run in the sixth inning of a 4-3 victory at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (11-7, 8-5 CCAA) won its fifth straight game and pulled to within one-half game of first place in a tightly-packed conference race.
Lerma allowed only seven hits and two earned runs over six innings to pick up the win. After allowing single runs in each of the first three innings, Lerma tossed three scoreless innings to end his stint. Adams allowed only two hits over three scoreless innings to finish up with his first save of the season.
Armett Johnson drove in three of Cal State LA's four runs, including the winning run in the sixth. He powered a drive down the right-field line that fell in just fair for a triple that scored
Noe Garcia with the go-ahead run.
Nic Bereaud was 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI and
Jordan Peabody also had a pair of hits.
Kai Gomez, Kaelan Crisosto and Trevor North had two hits each for Cal State Dominguez Hills (7-12, 4-9 CCAA). Rigo Fernandez allowed nine hits and four runs over 5 2/3 innings and Ian Codina tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.

The Toros regained the lead in the third on a run-scoring double by Crisosto, but the Golden Eagles tied it again in the bottom of the inning.
Andre Gregory singled, took second on a on a groundout and scored on a single up the middle by Bereaud.
The score remained tied at 3-3 until Johnson's triple in the sixth gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good.
