HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team had its offense working on Friday in an exciting California Collegiate Athletic Association victory at Cal State East Bay on Friday night.
The Golden Eagles saw a late six-point lead whittled down to two points, but made one last defensive stop to secure a 92-90 win in Pioneer Gym. Cal State LA (10-13, 6-12 CCAA) and Cal State East Bay engaged in an entertaining and hard-fought battle that wasn't finally decided until
Khalil Williams grabbed the rebound of a late missed 3-pointer by the Pioneers.
Sequan Walker led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 17 points. He was 6-of-9 from the floor, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range. Williams and
Elliott Smith had 13 points each and
Kenneth Cyprian had 12 points.
Druce Asah had a game-high 26 points for Cal State East Bay (8-17, 4-15 CCAA). Drew Bender had 15 points.
Jalyn Pennie,
Jihad Woods and
Sean Estes had seven points each for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA hit 12 of its 32 attempts from 3-point range. Walker led with four, Cyprian, Williams and Estes had two each and
Grant Arthur and
Brandon Hitchman added one each.
The Golden Eagles shot 41.8 percent for the game (28-of-67) and shot 50 percent in the second half (13-of-26) while making 4-of-11 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 24-of-33 from the free-throw line. Cal State East Bay shot 47.1 percent for the game (33-of-70) and was just 6-of-20 from 3-point range. The Pioneers were 18-of-28 from the free-throw line.
Cal State LA did not fare well on the boards and was out-rebounded, 52-29. Cal State LA, though, forced 19 turnovers and committed only six. Smith had three steals for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA led by as many as nine points in the first half, but Cal State East Bay surged back to take a 46-45 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles then fell behind by as many as five points early in the second half. The Golden Eagles still trailed, 66-62, before going on a 10-0 run to take the lead for good. Pennie started the run with a layup and a 3-pointer by Walker gave the Golden Eagles the lead.
Devin Means followed with a layup and Cyprian hit a 3-pointer to make it 72-66 with 10 minutes remaining.
Cal State LA then spent the remainder of the game trying to preserve the lead. A pair of free throws by Pennie made it 88-81 with 3:15 to go and a basket by Smith made it 90-84 with 2:10 to go. The Pioneers scored the next four points to close to within two points before a key layup by Cyprian made it 92-88 with 49 seconds left. The Golden Eagles then survived a late turnover and a late miss by the Pioneers.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Cal State Monterey Bay.
