Golden Eagles Beat Otters To Complete Road Sweep

SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team completed a successful weekend road trip with a win over Cal State Monterey Bay.

The Golden Eagles came up with the big plays down the stretch to beat the Otters, 84-74, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in The Kelp Bed. Cal State LA (11-13, 7-12 CCAA), which also beat Cal State East Bay on Friday, pulled to within one-game of eighth-place Cal State Dominguez Hills with three games remaining. The top eight teams will qualify for the CCAA Championship Tournament.

Jalyn Pennie had an outstanding game and led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 20 points and nine rebounds. Khalil Williams had 16 points, while Devin Means had 12 points and four assists.

Gregg Polosky had 15 points and 14 rebounds for Cal State Monterey Bay (4-20, 3-17 CCAA), while Stephen Matthews had 14 points and six rebounds.

Grant Arthur had nine points for Cal State LA, including a big 3-pointer that tied the game for the Golden Eagles with 5:09 remaining. Elliott Smith had seven points and Sequan Walker had six points and seven rebounds.

Cal State LA shot 41.2 percent for the game (28-of-68) and knocked down 12-of-36 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 16-of-23 from the free-throw line. Cal State Monterey Bay shot 34.8 percent (24-of-69) and made 9-of-28 from behind the arc. The Otters were 17-of-23 from the free-throw line.

Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 49-39, but forced 17 turnovers while committing 13.

The Golden Eagles gave up the first seven points of the game, but roared back to take 36-26 lead after a 3-pointer by Means and settled for a 38-29 halftime lead after a tip-in by Jihad Woods just before the halftime buzzer.

The Golden Eagles got the opening basket of the second half on a layup by Means to take a 40-29 lead and led by as many as 12 points, 52-40, after a layup by Means with 14:53 to go.

Cal State Monterey Bay, though, rallied and tied the game at 64-64 before taking a 67-64 lead on a 3-pointer by Matthews. The Otters led 69-66 before a 3-pointer by Arthur tied it for a final time. The Otters regained the lead on a free throw by Matthews, but Pennie had a go-ahead dunk that started a 7-0 run that gave Cal State LA the lead for good. Pennie scored all seven of those points. After his go-ahead dunk, he hit a 3-pointer and then hit another dunk to make it 76-70 with 3:36 to go. The Otters got to within four points with 3:22 to go, but the Golden Eagles closed the game on an 8-2 run.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with the Homecoming Game against Stanislaus State.
