SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team picked up its biggest road win of the season on Thursday night, but the Golden Eagles also saw their hopes for a California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament bid come to an end.
The Golden Eagles posted a thrilling 98-96 win over Cal State San Marcos, but Cal State Dominguez Hills stunned UC San Diego with a buzzer beater to eliminate Cal State LA from postseason consideration. Cal State LA (13-14, 9-12 CCAA) was able to split its season-series with Cal State San Marcos (19-8, 14-7 CCAA).
Jalyn Pennie continued his outstanding play with a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double to lead six Golden Eagles in double figures.
Sean Estes scored 14 points,
Jihad Woods had 12 points and six rebounds,
Khalil Williams had 12 points and six rebounds,
Grant Arthur had 11 points and was 3-of-4 from 3-point range and
Kenneth Cyprian also had 11 points.
Ethan Alvaro had 24 points for Cal State San Marcos, while Josh Spiers had 18 points and Joe Boyd had 17 points.
Elliott Smith had seven points and five rebounds for Cal State LA.
The Golden Eagles led for the majority of the game after a big 11-0 run in the first half. Cal State LA led by as many as 15 points in the opening half and led 49-38 at halftime. The second half was tight throughout and Cal State LA took the lead for good after a basket by Woods with five minutes to go.
Cal State LA shot 56.3 percent for the game (36-of-64) and hit 12 of 27 attempts from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 14-of-23 from the free-throw line. Cal State San Marcos shot 45 percent (33-of-72) and made 13 of 34 from 3-point range. The Cougars were 17-of-23 from the free-throw line.
The Golden Eagles held a 38-34 lead in the first half before embarking on their 11-0 run. Smith scored on a dunk to start the rally, Pennie hit a pair of free throws, Estes hit a 3-pointer and then a layup and
Devin Means made a layup to give the Golden Eagles a 49-34 lead. Cal State LA settled for a 49-38 halftime lead.
Woods hit a go-ahead basket with five minutes remaining and Cyprian followed with a 3-pointer to give the Golden Eagles an 87-83 lead. Cal State LA led the rest of the way, but missed some free throws late that made the game closer than it should have been. Pennie hit a 3-pointer to give the Golden Eagles a 94-90 lead in the final minute. He hit one free throw to keep the Golden Eagles ahead, 95-92, and Williams hit two free throws to keep the lead at 97-94. Means hit one free throw to make it 98-96 with five seconds left and Woods rebounded a 3-point miss at the buzzer to end it.
Cal State LA will conclude its season on Saturday with a road game at UC San Diego.
