Golden Eagles Wrap Up Season At UC San Diego

LA JOLLA -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team finished its 2017-18 season with a disappointing loss at UC San Diego Saturday night in RIMAC Arena.

The Golden Eagles, after an electrifying win over Cal State San Marcos on Thursday, could not muster a repeat performance on Saturday and fell to the Tritons, 84-64, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game. Cal State LA (13-15, 9-13 CCAA) finishes its season in ninth place in the conference, one spot out of a bid to the CCAA Championship Tournament.

Jalyn Pennie, the lone senior for Cal State LA, finished his season with a strong performance, leading the Golden Eagles with 18 points and five rebounds. Elliott Smith and Grant Arthur had 12 points each.

Christian Oshita led UC San Diego (18-10, 15-7 CCAA) with 19 points, while Christian Bayne had 18 points and five rebounds. George Buaku had 10 points.

Kenneth Cyprian and Bailey Kikuchi had five points each.

Cal State LA shot just 39 percent (23-of-59) in its season finale and hit just 6-of-24 from 3-point range. The Tritons made 54.1 percent (33-of-61) of their shots and were 7-of-22 from 3-point range. UC San Diego had a 39-35 rebounding edge and Cal State LA had 18 turnovers to 17 for the Tritons.

The Golden Eagles led only briefly in the first half. Trailing 14-10, the Golden Eagles got a 3-pointer from Arthur and a layup by Khalil Williams to take a 15-14 advantage. The Tritons, though, closed the first half on a 22-10 run to take a 36-25 halftime.

Cal State LA trailed by double-digit margins the rest of the way.
