CARSON -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team had a huge statistical advantage over Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday, but the Golden Eagles had to wait awhile for their efforts to be rewarded.
The Golden Eagles got a goal from
Kimberly Surio in the 72nd minute to break a scoreless tie and went on to a 1-0 win over the Toros in a non-conference game at Toro Field. Cal State LA (8-3-2) stretched its unbeaten streak to five games with its fourth shutout in five games. The Golden Eagles are 4-0-1 over their last five contests.
Cal State LA had a 24-7 advantage in shots, including a 10-1 edge in a scoreless first half that included a shot off the crossbar and another off the post. The Golden Eagles improved to 2-0 against the Toros this season. Cal State LA posted a 2-0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in a conference meeting last month.
Adriana Maldonado made two saves for the Golden Eagles, who posted their seventh shutout of the season. Ruth-Maria Soto made four saves for the Toros (2-9-2).
The lone goal of the game came after a free kick by
Meranda Salazar that Surio was able to flick into the goal with her heel for her first career goal.
The Golden Eagles had several good opportunities in the opening half, but were held scoreless.
Ashtyn Bracamonte hit the crossbar in the 27th minute and
Madison Mader was wide with an attempt seconds later. Mader then had a shot hit the post in the 42nd minute and
Paulina Chaidez and
Anahie Duran had follow-up attempts blocked in close.
Leslie Ramirez had a match-high seven shots for the Golden Eagles, while Chaidez, Bracamonte and
Tatiana Zuvic had three shots each.
Cal State LA will return to conference play next Friday at UC San Diego.
