LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team made things exciting, but the Golden Eagles were unable to find some late magic against San Francisco State.
The Golden Eagles had all five starters score in double figures in a 90-82 loss to the Gators in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest Saturday in University Gym. Cal State LA (7-10, 3-9 CCAA) erased most of a 10-point deficit and got to within two points with 3:36 to go, but just couldn't get enough stops to pull ahead.
Jihad Woods was unstoppable inside as he led the Golden Eagles with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
Garrett Carter had 18 points and four assists,
Elliott Smith had 14 points and six rebounds,
Devin Means had 13 points and three assists and
Kenneth Cyprian had 10 points.

Cal State LA shot 36.8 percent for the game (25-of-68) and knocked down 11 attempts from 3-point range, including four each from Carter and Cyprian and three from Means. The Golden Eagles were also 21-of-28 from the free-throw line. San Francisco State shot 51.8 percent (29-of-56) and made just 7-of-21 from 3-point range. The Gators were 25-of-31 from the free-throw line.
Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 44-34, but forced 15 turnovers while committing just eight.
The Golden Eagles started well and opened up an early 18-13 lead after a free throw by
Jalyn Pennie and led for most of the first half before a jumper by Jackson just before the buzzer gave San Francisco State a 37-35 halftime lead.
Cal State LA got baskets from Woods and Carter to open the second half and took a 39-37 lead, but the advantage was short-lived. San Francisco State went on a 15-2 run to open up a 52-41 lead. The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 12 points, 55-43, but the Golden Eagles scored the next nine points to close to within one. Woods started the run with basket, Cyprian and Means hit 3-pointers, Smith made a free throw and Means made a driving layup to make it 55-54 with 11:46 to go.
The Golden Eagles tied the game at 60-60 after a basket by Woods with 9:30 to play, but the Gators scored the next six points and led the rest of the way. Woods hit four straight free throws to pull the Golden Eagles to within 82-78 with 2:20 to go, but San Francisco State scored the next six points to put the game away.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road game at Cal State San Bernardino.
