SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team snapped more than one streak Thursday night in a memorable victory over Cal State San Bernardino.
The Golden Eagles put an end to a seven-game losing streak with an exciting 74-71 victory over the Coyotes in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in Coussoullis Arena. Cal State LA (8-10, 4-9 CCAA) picked up its first win on the road this season and completed a season sweep over Cal State San Bernardino (7-10, 5-8 CCAA).
The win also had some historical significance for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA won in Coussoulis Arena for the first time since a 66-60 victory in a first-round CCAA Championship Tournament game on March 1, 2011 and posted its first regular-season win in San Bernardino since 1998.
Sean Estes led a balanced offensive attack with 12 points that came courtesy of a 3-for-4 performance from 3-point range and a 3-for-4 outing at the free-throw line.
Garrett Carter had 11 points and six assists,
Kenneth Cyprian had 11 points and five rebounds,
Jihad Woods had 11 points and five rebounds and
Khalil Williams had 10 points, giving the Golden Eagles five players in double figures.
T.A. Dixon had a game-high 25 points for Cal State San Bernardino, while Ajon Efferson had 20 points.
Elliott Smith had seven points and seven rebounds and
Grant Arthur had six points on a pair of first-half 3-pointers that helped Cal State LA to a 17-point lead.
Cal State LA shot 44.6 percent (25-of-56) from the floor and was an effective 44.4 percent (12-of-27) from 3-point range. Cal State San Bernardino shot 44.4 percent (24-of-54) and was 8-of-23 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 12-of-22 from the free-throw line, while the Coyotes were 15-of-21. The teams were even on the boards, 33-33, and the Golden Eagles committed 15 turnovers to 18 for the Coyotes.
The game followed a similar script to Cal State LA's first win over Cal State San Bernardino on Dec. 14 in Los Angeles. In that one, Cal State LA had a 39-25 lead at halftime, built a 19-point lead in the second half, watched Cal State San Bernardino rally to tie it and then pulled away down the stretch for a 79-71 victory.
On Thursday, the Golden Eagles played a masterful first half and surged to a 44-27 lead at halftime and took an 18-point lead, 50-32, after a 3-pointer by Cyprian with 18:15 to go. Cal State LA still held a 52-35 lead following a basket by Woods with 17:33 remaining, but Cal State San Bernardino stormed back with a 13-0 run to make it a game.
The Coyotes ultimately took a 61-60 lead after a pair of free throws by Dixon with seven minutes to go, but the resilient Golden Eagles got a free throw from Woods, two free throws from Carter and a 3-pointer by Williams to take a 66-61 edge.
Cal State LA lost that lead, but regained it at 68-66 following a pair of free throws by Estes. After the Coyotes tied it again at 68-68, a 3-pointer by Williams gave the Golden Eagles a 71-68 lead with 4:11 to go. Cal State San Bernardino tied it one final time at 71-71, setting the stage for some late-game drama from Carter.
The Golden Eagles' leading scorer was fouled while making a go-ahead layup and his free throw that completed a three-point play provided the winning margin with 1:39 remaining. The Golden Eagle defense held strong and a big offensive rebound from Woods helped Cal State LA run precious time off the clock.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Cal Poly Pomona.
