POMONA -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team had high hopes for a California Collegiate Athletic Association upset at halftime, but a rough second half dashed those aspirations.
The Golden Eagles led by as many as seven points in the first half and had a three-point halftime lead, but Cal Poly Pomona used a 43-26 advantage in the second half to post a 69-55 victory in Kellogg Arena. Cal State LA (8-11, 4-10 CCAA) led 29-26 at halftime, but Cal Poly Pomona (14-3) made 16-of-29 field-goal attempts to erase the deficit.
Elliott Smith had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Jalyn Pennie had 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
Khalil Williams had eight points.
William Christmas had 25 points and 12 rebounds for Cal Poly Pomona, while Jordan Ogundiran had 11 points.
Kenneth Cyprian had seven points, while
Sean Estes and
Sequan Walker scored six points each.
Cal State LA shot 34.6 percent (18-of-52) for the game, while Cal Poly Pomona shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58). The Golden Eagles were 7-of-28 from 3-point range, while the Broncos were 6-of-20. The Golden Eagles were 12-of-17 from the free-throw line, while the Broncos were 15-of-23.
Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 47-28, and both teams committed 17 turnovers.
The Golden Eagles used a 9-0 run to turn a 20-18 deficit into a 27-20 lead late in the first quarter. After Williams hit a go-ahead 3-pointer, Smith hit a pair of free throws, made a steal and dunk and hit two more free throws to complete the run. Cal State LA settled for a 29-26 halftime lead.
Jihad Woods made a layup on Cal State LA's opening possession of the second half to give the Golden Eagles a 31-26 lead, but Cal Poly Pomona responded with a 10-0 run to take the lead for good. Estes stopped the run with a 3-pointer to make it 36-34 and a tip-in by Pennie made it 39-36 with 12:42 to go, but Cal Poly Pomona went on a 13-2 run to take control.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home game against Chico State.
