Golden Eagles Fall To Hot-Shooting Sonoma State

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team found itself leading by nine points early in the second half, but the Golden Eagles wound up stunned by an explosive Sonoma State surge.

The Golden Eagles opened up a 43-34 lead, only to get blitzed by some sharp shooting by the Seawolves in an 81-63 loss to Sonoma State Friday night in University Gym. Sonoma State shot 63 percent overall in the second half and knocked down 7-of-10 attempts from 3-point range to turn things around. Cal State LA (7-9, 3-8 CCAA) lost its sixth straight game.

Kenneth Cyprian scored a season-high 17 points for the Golden Eagles, while Khalil Williams and Elliott Smith had 10 points each.

Lewayne Grant had 20 points to lead Sonoma State, while Jackson Gion had 18 points, all of his points coming from six 3-pointers. He was 6-of-10 from behind the arc in the game. Jordan Fleck finished with 10 points.

Jalyn Pennie scored nine points and Devin Means had eight points and five rebounds.

Cal State LA struggled offensively and made just 38.3 percent of its shots (18-of-47). The Golden Eagles were 9-of-24 from 3-point range and 18-of-26 from the free-throw line. Sonoma State shot 50.9 percent for the game (29-of-57) and hit 11-of-23 attempts from 3-point range. Sonoma State was also 12-of-14 from the free-throw line.

Sonoma State had a 31-30 rebounding edge and took advantage of 21 Cal State LA turnovers while committing 14.

Cal State LA took a 36-31 lead late in the first half after a 3-pointer by Sean Estes and settled for a 36-34 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles opened the second half with a jumper by Williams, a layup by Means and a 3-pointer by Williams and took a 43-34 lead with 17:54 to go.

Sonoma State responded with a stunning 17-1 surge over a five-minute stretch before a 3-pointer by Grant Arthur. A three-point play by Pennie and a layup by Means brought the Golden Eagles within eight points, 60-52, with 9:34 to go. Sonoma State, though, scored the next seven points and led by double-digit margins the rest of the way.

Cal State LA will return to action with a home game against San Francisco State on Saturday.
