Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Golden Eagles End Up On Wrong End Of A Nailbiter

POMONA -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team found itself locked in another titanic battle with Cal Poly Pomona and this time the Golden Eagles came up short,

In a rematch of a first-round California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament matchup from last year, the Golden Eagles fell to the Broncos, 2-1, at Kellogg Field. Cal State LA (5-1, 1-1 CCAA) lost for the first time this season and ended up with a road split in its first conference games of the season.

Julian Zamora scored the only goal of the game for Cal State LA, which edged the Broncos, 2-1, in last year's conference tournament game, also at Kellogg Field. Cal Poly Pomona (5-2, 1-1 CCAA) got a pair of goals from the conference's leading scorer, Sergi Monsi, and held on for the win.

It was an evenly-fought game throughout. Each team finished with 12 shots. Cal Poly Pomona had a 6-3 edge in shots in the second half, but, after falling behind on Monsi's second goal, the Golden Eagles were able to pressure the Broncos down the stretch. Cal Poly Pomona had nine of its 14 fouls in the second half, including a pair of yellow cards as Cal State LA began to control possession. The Golden Eagles, though, were unable to get the tying goal and fell for the first time this season.

The Golden Eagles fell behind in the 14th minute when Monsi got a pass from Jimmie Villalobos in fired in a low shot to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead.

Zamora, though, quickly countered for Cal State LA with his team-leading fourth goal of the season. He got a pass from Miguel Galvan Lara and sent a shot into the bottom left corner of the net to tie it at 1-1. Galvan Lara picked up his second assist of the season.

Cal Poly Pomona got the final goal of the game in the 53rd minute when Monsi struck again with a second assist from Villalobos.

Steven Barrera had one save for the Golden Eagles, while Jason Trejos had three saves for the Broncos.

Zamora had four shots for the Golden Eagles, including three on goal. David Elizaga had three shots, while Steven Eberle, who had two goals in the win over Cal State San Bernardino on Friday, had two shots.

Cal State LA will return to action with a non-conference game against Hawaii-Hilo at home on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
