Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Golden Eagles Get Started On The Right Foot

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team got its California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule off to a strong start on Friday at Cal State San Bernardino's Premier Field.

The Golden Eagles got a pair of first-half goals from Steven Eberle and another penalty-kick save from Steven Barrera in a 2-0 win over the Coyotes in the conference opener for both schools. Cal State LA (5-0, 1-0 CCAA) remained unbeaten with an outstanding team effort against Cal State San Bernardino (2-4, 0-1 CCAA).

Eberle, the team's leading scorer in 2016, picked up his first two goals of the season and narrowly missed a third goal which would have given him his first career hat trick. He had a shot in the final minute of play hit the post.

Cal State LA finished with an 11-8 advantage in shots and both teams had three corner kicks. Barrera made four saves to record his third shutout of the season, while Cal State San Bernardino goalkeeper Jacob Huber made two saves and the Coyotes also cleared a scoring attempt by Julian Zamora off the line in the 89th minute.

Barrera, for the second time this season, made a huge save to preserve the shutout. Cal State San Bernardino was awarded a penalty kick, but Barrera denied the Coyotes' Hieu Ngo to keep the score at 2-0.

The combination of Eberle and Zamora was on fire in the opening half. Eberle scored his first goal in the fourth minute when he pounced on the rebound of a shot by Zamora and drilled it into the net.

Then, in the 23rd minute, that duo struck again. Zamora sent in a beautiful cross to Eberle, who was alone in front and, after striking the first shot off the post, got the second attempt to go for a 2-0 advantage.

Barrera made his big penalty kick save in the 57th minute and he made a final stop in the 86th minute to secure the shutout.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a game at Cal Poly Pomona at 2 p.m.
